Martha Loreine Payne Matthews, age 77, of Chatsworth, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at Advent Murray Hospital.

Loreine graduated Murray County High School in 1959 and lettered on the Murray County Varsity basketball team. She went to work in the Superior Court for 20 years. Then became the first elected woman in Murray County as Clerk of Superior Court, where she served for 24 years.

She is preceded in death by parents: Cecil and Chassie Payne, sister and brother in law: Katherine  and Johnny Reynolds, brother:  Ray Payne

She is survived by her son: Tony Matthews of Chatsworth grandchildren: Garrett Matthews of Chatsworth, Katie Matthews  Sloan and Zack Sloan, great-grandchildren: Brentley and Brooke Matthews, sister: Ann Walden of Crandall, special friends:  Craig and Karen Gibson of Chatsworth, nieces and nephews: Tina Russell Ballard of Chatsworth,  Sandra Holcomb and Jim Becton of Chatsworth, Robert and Gail Reynolds of Tulsa Ok, Andy Payne, Brian Payne and Samantha Willis, all of  Webster County other nieces and nephews also survive.

Service for Loraine will Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 11:00 am in the chapel of Shawn Chapman Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Clark officiating.  Interment will be Harrison Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 6, 2019, from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service will be held at 3 PM, on Saturday, December 7,  at New Zion Hill Baptist Church in Dalton.

Claude Head, age 89 of Chatsworth, passed away Friday, December 6, 2019 at Pruitt Health Care in Fort Oglethorpe.

He was preceded in death by his wife Edna Davenport Head; son, Gary Head; and daughter, Judy Craig.

He was an artist, musician, actor, and storyteller.

Charles was preceded in death by his father, Chalmer Clyde Engle, and mother, Goldie Leigh Mullins Engle.

Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Isaiah and Rachel Engle of Las Vegas, NV and Nicholas Engle of St. Paul, VA; daughter and son-in-law, Mariah and Steven Gribble of Chatsworth; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Tonia Engle of Vancleve, KY; sister and brother-in-law, Vera and Alex Gibson of Whitesburg, KY; grandchildren, Noah, Mason, Clay, Cash, Nora, and Veda; special cousin, Steve Mullins of Hutchinson, KS; and many other cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Mr. Melvin Donald “Don” Sosebee, Sr., age 79, of Chatsworth passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at his residence.

Don enjoyed classic cars, fishing, and outdoor recreation. He was a member of the Early Ford V8 Club of America (Lookout Mountain Region) and the Antique Automobile Club of America (Chickamauga and Northwest Georgia Regions).

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine Silvers Sosebee; parents, LeRoy and Estelle Sosebee; brother, Buff Sosebee; and sister, Carolyn Ramey.

Carlton McDaniel: Obituary

Carlton McDaniel, age 87 of Chatsworth, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 16, 2019 at his home.

Carlton proudly served his country as a sergeant in the Army during the Korean War Era in Army Intelligence. He was an active member of the Gideons International having served for 44 years. He also was a member of the Murray County Veterans and a member of the Spring Place Ruritan Club for 62 years and Friends of the Vann House, just to name a few. He and his wife Henrietta were actively involved in historic preservation of not only their home but other places within Murray and Whitfield County. He was serving as Chairman of the Hardee’s Think Tank after being appointed by Ken Wilburn. Jim Middleton has been appointed his successor in this position.

After his wife’s passing in 2013, Carlton began a scholarship at Murray County High School to honor her memory. He was responsible for helping to celebrate his community through the creation of the splash pad, and most recently a playground for Spring Place Elementary School. He also helped with the purchase of the Boys and Girls Club of Chatsworth facility and with the purchase of the Youth Facility at First Baptist Church of Chatsworth.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Henrietta McDaniel; and parents, Sam and Amy McDaniel.

He is survived by his children, Wayne McDaniel; Nancy McDaniel Shipley; Jodi and Dale Lowery; and David and Lori McDaniel; brother, Herman McDaniel; grandchildren, Heather  Foster (Adam) Ambrecht, Chris ( Lauren) Foster, Andrew McDaniel, Lauren (Bobby) Wiley, Joe McDaniel, and Emma McDaniel; great-grandchildren, Venice, Indigo, Ryan, Will, Lucas, Ross, Elise, Aedyn and Thomas Henry; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Carlton McDaniel will be 6:00 pm Sunday, November 17th 2019 from Chatsworth First Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Carr, Rev. George Ross and Tim Howard officiating. Burial will be in Spring Place Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm Sunday, November 17th 2019 at Chatsworth First Baptist Church.
