Mr. Mitchell Dean Morris, age 42, of Chatsworth, passed away on October 14, 2018, at Murray Medical Center.

He is preceded in death by grandparents: Clyde & Jewel Morris and John & Blanch Hensley, uncle: Perry Morris.

Mr. Morris is survived by spouse: Mitzi Morris of Chatsworth, parents: Scott & Joyce Morris of Chatsworth, children: Matthew Morris, Pery Morris, Brinley Morris, Morgan Rankin all of Chatsworth, mother in law & father in law: Darrell and Shirley Hill of Chatsworth, brother and sister- in law: Michael  and Tina Morris of Dalton, sister in law: Tonya Bowers of Chatsworth, brother in law: Jason Bowers of Chatsworth,  special aunt: Sharon Hensley of Blairsville, special nieces: Shelby Morris of Chatsworth, Brandy Tinsley of Dalton. Several nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 17, at 2 PM in the chapel of Shawn Chapman Funeral Home with Rev Mark Rogers and Darrell Hill officiating.  Interment will be in Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 16, 2 until 9 PM at the funeral home.

Miss Margaret Ann Cate, 86 of Chatsworth, passed away Friday, October 12, 2018 after a brief illness.

She was born in Ocoee, Tennessee, to parents, Grover C. and Annie Howell Cate. One of five girls, she was a lifelong resident of the Chatsworth area.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Jean Vick, Jo Parrott, and Martha Sue Vining; brothers-in-law, Judson Vick, Therlow Craig, and R.L. Parrott; niece, Judy Ware.

Survivors include sister, Ruth Craig of Dalton; brother-in-law, Robert Vining of Dalton; nieces and nephews, Laura and Mark Orr, Jane Cochran, Susan Parrott, Tommy Vick; great nieces and nephews, David and Sandy Nix, Tracey and Heath Morton, Chris and Lynn Ware, Melissa and Steve White, Jussey Vick, Dane Vick, Sage Vick, Craig Cochran, Nathan Cochran, Anna and Gabriel Kussin, Kate Orr; great-great nieces and nephews and many special neighbors also survive.

A graveside service for Miss Cate will be held on Monday, October 15 at 4:00 p.m. at Murray Memorial Gardens with Dr. Dean Osuch officiating.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 922 E. Morris Street, Dalton, GA 30721.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chatsworth and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Ms. Harris was preceded in death by her parents, C.D. Harris & Cam Keith Harris; sister, Ann H. Brindle; brother, Charles R. Harris.

Survivors include brother-in-law, C.P. Brindle of Crandall; several nephews, great nieces & nephews, and great-great nieces & nephews.

No services will be held.

Charles Gary Thornton, age 49 of Dalton, passed away October 5th 2018

He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Thornton; brother, Lamar Thornton; and sisters, Laura Fridl and Judy Stafford.

He is survived by his mother, Catherine Lora Thornton; daughter, Maya Rearden; sister Gail Williams; brother, Jimmy Bethune; nieces and nephews, James Bethune, Brittany Chance, Tiffany Cargal, Whitney Shaw, Wesley Massengill, Zachary Massengill, Kaleb Pack, and Vence Fridl.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Charlie Thornton will be  2:00 pm Saturday, October 13th 2018 from the Chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Tunnel Hill with Rev. Carlos Motley officiating.

John Roy Brackett

JANUARY 21, 1925 ~ OCTOBER 4, 2018 (AGE 93)

Mr. John Roy Brackett, age 93 of Cisco, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, October 4th, 2018. He was of the Baptist faith.

Johnny was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and proudly served his country during WW II. He will be especially remembered in the community and state for his great love and knowledge of the Cohutta Wilderness due to the many long hours acquired across a lifetime of hunting and fishing. Subsequently, he acquired an impressive collection of local Indian artifacts.

After retirement from the U.S. Forestry Service, he spent most Saturdays cheering on the U.T. Vols. He was a devoted and loyal fan in both football and basketball, especially Pat Summitt’s Lady Vols.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Douthitt Brackett; his parents Rev. J.E. and Etta Brackett; sister Gladys Ellis; brothers: Willie (Edna), J.P. (Louise), and Herbert Brackett; sisters-in-law Phyllis (Bill) Campbell and Maxine (Roy) Kersey.

John Roy is survived by his “special grandchildren Jack and Audrey Stafford, along with his faithful and loyal companion Buddy.  Nieces: Lisa (John) Stafford; Pamela (Tom) Ownby; Teresa (Steven) Suttles; nephews: Jerry (Susan) Ellis, Harold Brackett; and sister Leoma Brock; great and great-great nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors.

The family wishes to thank his devoted caregivers: Jeremy and Leia Collins, Tammy Hesson, Faye Manis and Tina Flatters. Their love and kindness allowed John Roy to remain where he was most happy, at home, with his faithful dog Buddy.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of John Brackett will be 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 10th 2018 from the chapel of Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Lamar Beason officiating, remarks by Judge Shepherd Howell and Jack Stafford. Burial will be in Mt. Sumach Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Brackett, Harold Brackett, Jeremy Collins, Jerry Ellis, Tom Ownby and Jack Stafford.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 10th 2018 from 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM

Jarrett Broaddrick age 36 of Crandall, passed away Friday, October 5, 2018.

He attended Gathering Place Church in Dalton, enjoyed watching the Georgia Bulldogs and loved his family, especially his son.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Cantrell Broaddrick.

Survivors include son, Tekoa Broaddrick of Chatsworth; father, Jerry Broaddrick of Ohio; sister and brother-in-law, Tammeli & William Childers of Crandall; niece, Josie Arnold; special friends, Troy Lanier, Russell Richards, Chris Johnson, and Robert Battles.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

*UPDATED* School Closings Due to Severe Weather Conditions

  • Union County Schools will be CLOSED Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th due to Gov. Nathan Deal declaring a state of emergency for all 159 counties in Georgia. Please continue to monitor here for further updates.
  •  Fannin County Schools will be closed for students and all personnel on Monday, September 11 and Tuesday, September 12, for students, as well as all faculty and staff, except for 12-month personnel, district directors, and principals. As long as it is safe to do so, all 12-month personnel, as well as district directors and principals, should anticipate reporting by 9:00 a.m. on September 12.  These personnel should note, though, that this expectation may be revised, depending on the weather conditions overnight; nonetheless, if you ever believe it is unsafe to report, please notify your immediate supervisor. In addition, the Board of Education work session meeting that was scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, has been cancelled.  Please continue to stay safe!
  • Pickens County Schools closed Monday, September 11th – TWELVE MONTH EMPLOYEES REPORT AT NORMAL TIME. Schools will also be closed on Tuesday, September 12.  Twelve month employees will be contacted late Monday as to whether they will be required to come to work on Tuesday. All school activities, including athletic events and after-school programs, will be canceled.
  • Gilmer County Schools  will be closed Monday, September 11th and Sepember 12th due to Hurricane Irma. We have made this decision after consultation with local emergency management authorities and careful consideration of safety factors, such as the probability of severe winds especially at higher elevations, debris, dangerous road conditions and downed power lines left in its wake. Only 12 month staff should report if safe to do so.
  • Dawson County Schools  will be closed on Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Twelve month employees will operate on a 2 hour delay.
  • Lumpkin County Schools closed due to the weather forecast for our area, Lumpkin County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. The anticipated high winds pose a significant threat to our students and staff. We understand that weather predictions are not always accurate, but we cannot ignore the potentially dangerous situation that this storm poses. Our number one priority is to keep our students and staff safe! Wednesday will still be a early release day as planned so that teachers will be available for parent conferences. 12 month employees should report if it is safe to do so. 
  • Towns County Schools closed Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th for all students. All employees should report at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 12th if safe to do so.
  • White County Schools due to the severe weather forecast, White County Schools are closed for students and staff Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Please be safe!
  • Murray County Schools closed Monday September 11 and Tuesday September 12, due to the possible impact of Hurricane Irma.   We have made this decision after consultation with local emergency management authorities and careful consideration of safety factors, such as the probability of severe winds, debris, dangerous road conditions, and downed power lines.  We understand that weather predictions are often incorrect, but the size of this storm cannot be ignored. It is our hope that Murray County is spared from any of this storm’s impact, but we will always choose to error on the side of caution.  All events planned for Monday and Tuesday evenings are also cancelled.  This includes the September 11 MCPS Board meeting.  This meeting will be rescheduled for Thursday, September 14 at 6:15 p.m.  All maintenance, grounds crew, and transportation employees will meet at the transportation office.

Governor Deal has us under a State of Emergency. Severe weather conditions, such as severe winds (especially at higher elevations), debris, dangerous road conditions, and downed power lines are all possible for our area beginning tomorrow(Monday) morning.Weather predictions are not always accurate, but this storm is massive and cannot be ignored. It is my hope that our community is spared from this, but it is better to err on the side of caution when safety is in question.  Please stay safe!
  • Pickens County Schools closed   Jasper, Georgia — Due to inclement weather conditions,the Pickens County School District will be closed tomorrow, Monday, September 11th – TWELVE MONTH EMPLOYEES REPORT AT NORMAL TIME. Schools will also be closed on Tuesday, September 12.  Twelve month employess will be contacted late Monday as to whether they will be required to come to work on Tuesday. All school activities, including athletic events and after-school programs, will be canceled.  Information will be posted on the Pickens County School District website at www.pickenscountyschools.org, the Infinite Campus parent portal, district and school websites and social media sites, and sent to local media.

    *  Dawson County Schools Closed   Based on information from the NWS, Dawson County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 11, 2017. Twelve month employees report.

    *  Lumpkin County Schools Closed   Due to the weather forecast for our area, Lumpkin County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 11, 2017.  The anticipated high winds pose a significant threat to our students and staff.
