Mr. Winston G. Hackney, 69 of Chatsworth, passed away Monday, November 12, 2018 at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah L. Hackney; son, Waylon Keith Hackney; father, George Washington Hackney.

Survivors include his son, Michael Shane Hackney; daughters and son-in-law, Sherry Renee Sane, Angela Marcia and Eric Mullinax all of Chatsworth; mother, Clara Sue Carter of Dalton; sister, Katherine Susann Hackney of Gordon Co.; Grandchildren, Terry, Andrew, Shelby, Angelia, Katie, Harley, Christopher, Nikki, Starr, Bubba, and Ashley; several great grandchildren; special friends, Edward Joseph Garmley and James Weaver; extended family also survives.

Funeral Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Hackney will be held Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Peeples Funeral Home with Bro. Sammy Randolph officiating. Interment will follow in the Varnell Cemetery.

Austine Baggett, age 88 of Dalton, passed away Friday, November 2nd 2018 at her son and daughter-in-law’s home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Baggett; parents, Virgil and Vena Hardy; son, Dewayne Lee Baggett; and brother, Raymond Hardy.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Wynette Baggett; daughter, Bobbie Jean Baggett Amos; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Yvonne Hardy and Tom and Reba Hardy; sisters and brother-in-law, Mildred Norris, Geneva Parker, and Pat and Harold Hawkins; grandchildren, Marie Morgan, Ricky Morgan, Jason and Margaret Baggett, and Jonathan Carr; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Austine Baggett will be 1:00 pm Monday, November 5th 2018 from New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Kilgore and Rev. James Smith officiating. Burial will be in New Hope-Kilgore Cemetery.

Edward Eugene Hall, age 77 of Rocky Face passed away Thursday, October 25th 2018 in Hamilton Medical Center.

He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Patricia Roach and Angela and Scott Emmert; grandchildren, Jordan Roach, Isobel Emmert, and Edward Maxwell Emmert; and ex-wife and mother of his children, Shelley Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Fred Shaw and a son Orla Shaw.

Survivors include her daughter and son in law Juanita and Wayne Surrency, grandchildren and spouses, Tina and Tommy Cochran, Ellen and Ben Bishop, Ruby Shaw, Orlando and Monica Shaw all of Chatsworth, Patricia and Dennis Fisher of Hope Mill, NC. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, at 1 pm at the chapel of Shawn Chapman funeral home.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, 5 till 9 pm.

John Roy Brackett

JANUARY 21, 1925 ~ OCTOBER 4, 2018 (AGE 93)

Mr. John Roy Brackett, age 93 of Cisco, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, October 4th, 2018. He was of the Baptist faith.

Johnny was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and proudly served his country during WW II. He will be especially remembered in the community and state for his great love and knowledge of the Cohutta Wilderness due to the many long hours acquired across a lifetime of hunting and fishing. Subsequently, he acquired an impressive collection of local Indian artifacts.

After retirement from the U.S. Forestry Service, he spent most Saturdays cheering on the U.T. Vols. He was a devoted and loyal fan in both football and basketball, especially Pat Summitt’s Lady Vols.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Douthitt Brackett; his parents Rev. J.E. and Etta Brackett; sister Gladys Ellis; brothers: Willie (Edna), J.P. (Louise), and Herbert Brackett; sisters-in-law Phyllis (Bill) Campbell and Maxine (Roy) Kersey.

John Roy is survived by his “special grandchildren Jack and Audrey Stafford, along with his faithful and loyal companion Buddy.  Nieces: Lisa (John) Stafford; Pamela (Tom) Ownby; Teresa (Steven) Suttles; nephews: Jerry (Susan) Ellis, Harold Brackett; and sister Leoma Brock; great and great-great nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors.

The family wishes to thank his devoted caregivers: Jeremy and Leia Collins, Tammy Hesson, Faye Manis and Tina Flatters. Their love and kindness allowed John Roy to remain where he was most happy, at home, with his faithful dog Buddy.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of John Brackett will be 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 10th 2018 from the chapel of Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Lamar Beason officiating, remarks by Judge Shepherd Howell and Jack Stafford. Burial will be in Mt. Sumach Cemetery.

He attended Gathering Place Church in Dalton, enjoyed watching the Georgia Bulldogs and loved his family, especially his son.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Cantrell Broaddrick.

Survivors include son, Tekoa Broaddrick of Chatsworth; father, Jerry Broaddrick of Ohio; sister and brother-in-law, Tammeli & William Childers of Crandall; niece, Josie Arnold; special friends, Troy Lanier, Russell Richards, Chris Johnson, and Robert Battles.

Tom Arthur Phipps: Obituary

Tom Arthur Phipps, age 87 of Dalton, Georgia, passed away September 30, 2018 at Hamilton Medical Center.

He was a veteran, teacher, pastor, and mentor to many.Tom loved music and hiking on the Appalacian Trail. He wrote two songs, The Georgia Waltz and Walking On the Appalacian Trail.

Tom Arthur Phipps was born November 27, 1930 in Akron, Ohio, where his parents had moved to work at the Goodyear Tire Factory during the Great Depression. The family returned to Georgia in 1937. Tom attended Dawnville School and graduated high school in 1950 at Mount Berry School for Boys in Rome, Georgia. While at Berry, he studied the “Life of Jesus” and became a Christian in 1949. Drafted in April of 1951, Tom took basic training at Camp Breckenridge, KY and jump school at Fort Benning, GA.  He shipped out to join the 187th Airborne R.C.T. “Rakkasans” at Camp Chickamauga in Beppu, Japan and was assigned to Medical Company. In Korea Tom served at Koji-Do and saw patrol action in the Kumwha Valley. Discharged from the Army in April 1953, Tom entered Truett McConnell Junior College on the G.I. Bill, where he met Jerri Caldwell. They were married in 1957. Tom earned an A.B. degree from Mercer University in 1959, a Master of Education degree from the University of Georgia in 1975, and finished a Course of Study in Theology at Emory University in the 1980s. Over a twenty-one year period, Tom taught eighth grade at Pleasant Grove Elementary in Whitfield County, Cass High School and Adairsville High Schools in Bartow County and Mountain Top Boy’s Home in Sugar Valley.

Tom’s Christian ministry took him first to Mount Yonah Baptist Church in Cleveland, Georgia and to Johnson Drive Baptist Church in Athens, where his and Jerri’s children were born.  Local churches Tom served included Eton Baptist Church, Friendship Baptist, Hopewell Baptist in Cohutta, McGaughey’s Chapel UMC, Mount Pleasant UMC, Mineral Springs UMC, all in Whitfield County, and Kensington UMC and Cedar Grove UMC in Walker County.  He retired from Mineral Springs UMC in 1998, where he was still an active member. Tom was active in the community, serving on the board of Harvest Outreach Center for the Homeless, and in the Big Brother/Big Sister program. He was a long-time member of the Whitfield County Democratic Committee.

Tom was a member of American Legion Post 112, serving as a baseball manager and coach during the 1990s, and later as post and district chaplain and member of the Honor Guard. Tom was also served as national chaplain of the The 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment Association “Golden Rakkasans,” exemplifying the motto, “Let Valor Not Fail!”

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Myrtle Phipps, sister Jaqueline Phipps Baggett, and brothers Buster Phipps and Allen Phipps.

Tom is survived by his wife of 61 years, Geraldine “Jerri” Caldwell Phipps and by his children and their spouses, Cheryl Phipps and Bruce Harris of Dalton, and Chris and Maseray Phipps of Troy, Michigan, and his grandchildren, Carmen Phipps, Mia Phipps and Tom Phipps, all of Troy, Michigan.

The family will receive friends from 5pm to 9pm on Friday, October 5 at Jones Funeral Home in Chatsworth.  Services will be at noon Saturday, October 6 at Mineral Springs UMC, 4079 Airport Road in Dalton. The body will lie in state at the church from 11 am. Interment will follow in the Mineral Springs UMC cemetery with military graveside rites by the Dalton American Legion Post 112.

The family expresses thanks to Hamilton Home Health Care, Hamilton Wound Care, Hamilton Hospice and the many other physicians and nurses who were diligent in taking care of Tom’s needs.

Mrs. Marie  McPherson age 82 of Dalton passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her Husband Earmon McPherson, son Jerry McPherson, brother Frankie Hedrick and sister, Freda Mae Hedden.

Survivors include her children and spouse, Gary and Dorothy McPherson of Dalton, Keith McPherson of Murphy, NC.  Three brothers, Calvin and Harold Hedrick of Dalton and Leon Hedrick of Chatsworth. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive.
