ROME—A huge game by Judson Petty paved the way for a North Murray Road win over host Model 35-28. The win secured the seventh straight winning season and playoff appearance for the Mountaineers.

Early in the game the Model defense forced a North Murray fumble and returned it down to the Mountaineers 6-yard line. The fumble recovery set up a Jake Sanders to Brant Pace touchdown for Model. The first of three Sanders touchdown passes put the Blue Devils out front 7-0. The Model lead was short-lived as the huge night for North Murray’s Judson Petty was just beginning.

With just under 4-minutes to play in the first quarter, Judson Petty hit a wide-open Jadyn Rice on a halfback pass to tie the game at 7. Petty struck again early in the second quarter, this time on the ground. A 47-yard scamper gave North Murray their first lead of the night. The 14-7 Mountaineer lead only lasted 14-seconds. Model’s Brandon Welsh returned the ensuing kickoff 85-yards to even the game at 14.

Petty reclaimed the lead for the Mountaineers minutes later. North Murray senior quarterback Seth Griffin hit Petty on a deep pass down the sideline for a 47-yard Mountaineer touchdown. The Mountaineers carried the 21-14 advantage into the locker room at the half.

North Murray extended their lead in the third quarter. Griffin connected with Jadyn Rice late in the quarter to push their lead to 27-14. Model answered early in the fourth quarter. Jake Sanders connected with Jeremiah Gamble on a touchdown pass to bring the Blue Devils within a touchdown at 27-21.

Petty answered for the Mountaineer’s minutes later. Petty took a hand-off into the heart of the Model defense and broke out of the pack to score from 16-yards out. The touchdown, and Griffin to Liam Rogers 2-point conversion put North Murray up 35-21 with just 5-minutes left to play.

After a quick Model drive, Jake Sanders connected with Jayden Hames bringing the Blue Devils to within one score at 35-28. North Murray was able to hold onto the ball and run out the clock to close out the game.

North Murray moves to 6-3 (4-1) and will be idle next week. Model falls to 5-4(3-2) and will finish their regular season at Gordon Central next Friday.
