Murray County Sole Commissioner Greg Hogan held a first reading on a noise ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting. The ordinance will have a second reading and will be decided on at the August meeting.
“We’ve had some problems with people wanting to play loud music up late into the night and you can’t do that,” Hogan said.
The amendment is Amendment: to the Code of Murray County, Chapter 26, Article II, Section 26-26 and reads:
It shall be unlawful for any person to make, continue, or cause to be made or continued in the unincorporated areas of the county, any loud, unnecessary or unusual sound or noise which either annoys, disturbs, injures or endangers the comfort, repose, health, peace of safety of others in the county, and which is plainly audible to a person of normal hearing ability at a distance of 100 feet from the point of origin of hte sound or noise, or in the case of real property, beyond the property limits from which such sound or noise emanates, whichever is farthest.
This includes radios, phonographs and other machines or devices that produce or reproduce sound.
He also heard from a resident of Mount Caramel Church Road who was concerned about tractor trailers speeding down the road. He said he and his neighbors would like the speed limit changed from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles-per-hour.
Hogan said there was more involved than simply changing the signs.
“The road has to be engineered,” he said, adding that it may have already been engineered and the report could be part of the backlog at the Georgia Department of Transportation.
He also added that tractor trailers shouldn’t be using Mount Caramel Church Road.
“I can put up ‘no truck’ signs at each end,” he said.
