Janice Kaye Lopez-Cortez: Obituary

Janice Kaye Lopez-Cortez, age 72, of Chatsworth passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2015.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Mrs. Lopez-Cortez had a lifelong love of reading and learning. She obtained her GED in 1979 at the age of 36, Certificate of Graphic Arts in 1980, and Certificate in Office Careers in 1987. She became a Certified Nursing Assistant in 1989.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her parenting skills were years before their time. She was always constructive and positive, but if you needed it, she would bust that bottom.

She was a talented singer and guitarist. When offered the opportunity to sing professionally, she politely declined because she “needed to stay home and raise her kids.” She sang with several different gospel groups. She was often called on to sing solos in church, as well.

Mrs. Lopez-Cortez was a lifelong Christian who never wavered from her goal to get to heaven and to provide her children with the tools and knowledge they needed to make it there, too. She went on a mission after all her children were grown and on their own to California to minister to the Laotian people there for two years. She loved all people she met and was not judgmental. She may have hated the sin but always loved the sinner.

Mrs. Lopez-Cortez was preceded in death by her parents, Sport & Lillie Bell Rymer.

Survivors include her husband, Jose Lopez of Chatsworth; son, Darryl J. Swallows of Calhoun; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet L. Swallows of Chatsworth, Christie & Poncho Gonzalez of Chatsworth, and Tina & Sherwood Brewer of Cleveland, TN; sisters and brother-in-law, Geraldine & Gail Thomas of Cleveland, TN and Lois Shahane of Cleveland, TN; grandchildren, Jayson, Joey, Alicia, Zachary, Harley, Shaylin, and Briona Swallows, Tony and Cody Cheek, Matthew and Zalyn Gonzalez, and Amanda Brewer; and great-grandchildren, Brayden and Jayden Cheek.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lopez-Cortez will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 22, 2015 from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Shugart Road in Dalton with Bishop Armando Torres officiating. Interment will follow in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Dalton.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 until 9:00 pm and on Friday from 5:00 until 9:00 pm.
